HISTORY

The Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) is a cavity-nesting sea duck species that breeds throughout boreal forests of North America, Europe, and Asia. From 1993 to 1996, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Wildlife Society Student Chapter installed 150 nest boxes along the upper Chena River east of Fairbanks, Alaska with support from Ducks Unlimited. In 1997, the United States Army Corps of Engineers Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project leadership joined the program. Since the beginning of this partnership, Dr. Eric Taylor and numerous researchers have collected annual nesting data on all eggs, incubating hens, and ducklings that hatch. Nearly 30 years later, The Alaska Goldeneye Project stands as one of the longest-running marked waterfowl datasets of the species.
